Our long term objective has been to offer designs that are true to the regional style, correctly proportioned to the size and style of the house and, if possible, to show a potential customer exactly what a design will look like when scaled to the size of the opening into which it is to be installed.
A line drawing transcribed |
In order to achieve thesse ideals photographs of local stained glass panels were transcribed using CorelDraw software into line art drawings. This process resulted in our book (see Design section) of black and white line drawings. This shares the draw-back of most pattern books in that customers find it difficult to imagine what the design would look like in colour, so in the intervening years, we have modified these drawings to show full colour.
The same drawing |
This is still a compromise since it really isn't possible to show the way that glass textures create depth to the colour by the way they difract the light from objects outside.
Since all designs are editable this allows for easy scaling to fit a variety of different sizes and the printing of very accurate working plans. An additional benefit of the portfolio being in an editable form is that we can easily mix and match designs so that a motif can be taken from one design and incorporated into another.
Our designs portfolio is based around this collection of drawings and consists of designs for door and window panels for houses dating from 1880 through to 1940 in many styles from Victorian Geometric and Floral to Art Nouveau, Edwardian, 1920's and 1930's floral and landscape and Art Deco. Since the publication of the book the portfolio has been extended a great deal such that for door panels alone there are now over 220 design illustrations in full colour. The photographic archive provides a further source of material and we can also call on a number of useful stained glass pattern books for inspiration should the potential customer not find a design within our portfolio to suit their requirements.
We are happy to visit local customers to advise and assist in the selection of a suitable design. Regrettably we are not able to offer this service outside of the Nottingham area. If you are outside the area you are welcome to email us with your enquiry.
